Answer a few plain-English questions and download the official IRS Form W-9, filled in and ready to sign. Free, no sign-up.
This form works entirely in your browser. Your name, address and Social Security or employer identification number are never sent to Ledger Brigade or anyone else, and nothing is stored on our server.
Check it yourself: once this page has loaded, switch off your internet, fill in the form and download your W-9. It still works, because nothing needs to be sent anywhere.
To protect your information, we have removed all analytics and chat tools from this page, and the page itself is set to block any data from being sent out.
Your W-9 is saved only to your device. Share it only with the business that asked for it, preferably through their secure portal rather than ordinary email.
Ledger Brigade is not affiliated with the IRS. This tool fills in the official IRS Form W-9 (Rev. March 2024). General information, not tax or legal advice.
Businesses ask for a Form W-9 before paying you, so they have your correct name and taxpayer identification number for the information returns (such as Form 1099-NEC) they file with the IRS. You give the W-9 to the business, not to the IRS. Businesses: see our Form 1099-NEC checker.
A W-9 is only for US persons. If you are, for example, a freelancer in India working for a US client, you usually give Form W-8BEN instead (or Form W-8BEN-E for a business).
The IRS instructions say that for “other payments”, which include payments for your services as a contractor, “You must give your correct TIN, but you do not have to sign the certification unless you have been notified that you have previously given an incorrect TIN.” Most businesses still expect a signature, so we recommend signing, on screen or by hand.
