When you need a consent letter

Every GST registration needs proof of your principal place of business. If you own the premises, one ownership document is enough; if you rent, your rent agreement does the job. But if the premises belong to your spouse, a parent or another relative, or you share premises without any agreement, the owner gives a consent letter on plain paper, together with a copy of their identity proof and one document showing their ownership, such as the latest property tax receipt, municipal khata copy, electricity bill or water bill.

Common mistakes

  • The address on the letter does not match the electricity bill or property tax receipt word for word. A mismatch is one of the reasons an officer can raise a query.
  • The ownership document is in someone else’s name, for example a grandparent who has died. That needs different documents.
  • Only one of several joint owners signs. Where the property is jointly owned, it is good practice for every owner to sign.
